Hi there I am a Veterinarian Technition who is telling you that bloody stool with mucus IS NOT NORMAL! Any type of mucus screams intestional aggravation. What you are describing sounds like Giardia. Take a sample to another vet as soon as you can. In the mean time... fast your puppy for 12 hours. No food except for water. No bones or toys they can ingest. I know that sounds awful, but that is the only way to get diahhrea out of your pups system. After the 12 hours you need to feed a bland diet until your puppy has a solid bowel. You can boil chicken and rice or hamburg and rice (with the fat rinsed off of both) or puchase Canine I/D food from a Vet. Most vets will prescribe Metronidazole along with the bland diet (is that the RX the vet gave you?). IMPORTANT: If you puppy still is having loose stool (even if blood/mucus is gone) after you fast then your puppy absolutely has worms, not a virus. My advice would be to go to another vet with a sample. Good luck!!

Really should take it back or at least call the vet, does not make sense for it to last this long, you did not say where you are from. They just had a huge pet food recall in the US, a lot of pet foods were making animals sick and many have died.

It may be just something intestinal, hopefully but it sounds like it lasted way to long, then again sometimes the injections will cause that and if he gave it a worming medicine that may have some effect too.

Best of luck to you

PS: Sounds like maybe you need a second opinion, can't hurt you don't want your pup suffering

This sounds a lot like the symptoms of parvo virus. Does the bloody diarrhea have a very strong bad odor to it? Is your puppy lethargic? Is he vomiting? And did you get your puppy from a pet store or just some person whose dog had puppies? If so, the chances are very high that your dog wasn't immunized against parvo virus. If left untreated, parvo is FATAL. You need to take your puppy to an emergency vet clinic IMMEDIATELY. This isn't something that can wait until the morning. If it is parvo, they will put your dog on IV fluids to help support his internal organs while the virus runs it's course. Without these fluids (which are different than just giving your dog lots of water to drink) the chances of survival are slim to none. Even with treatment, parvo can still be fatal. The only thing I can say is get your dogs from reputable breeders or animal shelters - NOT PET STORES.

Get another vet to check the puppy. Try and take a sample of what the puppy is passing.
A bland diet might help a delicate tummy, boiled rice and chicken mince (make sure there are not bits of bone in the mince) . The mince is available from good pet stores.

Good luck .

Ok..It's not normal BUTT my puppy went through the samee thing. He has like a stomach flu. My vet gave me this pills and my puppy was fine the next day. But my Vet did say he COULD OF SWALLOWED PESISATES which are bad for them. You can get it tested in thier lab. Take a sample of the blood and mucuss and ETC. to a vet (a difff. vet) and let them test it. DONT WORRY it's not that BAD lol.

GOOD LUCK

it could be stress, worms, or parvo. If you don't like your vets opinion, have another vet look at the puppy. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion..
By the way... is the puppy running a temp? Temp and bloody, mucousy stool=problems.

the food may be too harsh for its stomach. boil some hamburger or chicken with some rice and feed it to him.. it should clear up.. be sure to give plenty of water so he doesn't dehydrate. try purina puppy chow after the diarrhea clears up some. i would also get a second opinion from another vet if the problem continues... had the same problem when i changed foods on one of my dogs. her problem cleared up when i put her back on her regular food. good luck! :)

Have you had the vet check the dog for worms? really, you should go back to him and get something to rehydrate the dog, constant loose stools will make that puppy weak, please, for the dogs sake and your well being try another vet for a second opinion. rubberstamper
