Even when in the Majority in total number of votes for a candidate, recent history shows us that it does not matter. Seven years ago the MAJORITY of Americans voted for and in effect therfore against the current leader of the free world.
So in that instance i would say it is totally pointless.

There's been more than enough surprise election results to tell you that you don't know the vote until it is counted. So who are you going to vote for.

A variation on your question is 'why vote for a minor party when it will never be in government and therefore will never have any power?' The answer is that minor parties can have a greater influence than mere numbers might suggest.

Depending on the system of government, there can be many ways that an opposition can keep the government in check.
In a bicameral system it is not unusual to have the majority in both houses from different parties. Since both the upper and lower house need to agree on a bill.
Third parties and independents can often make up the "balance of power" as their votes are required by either the Government or the Opposition for a vote to be carried.
So even a member with no party can have an important role in shaping legislation. In democracies with multiple parties, there is no such thing as a majority. In these cases a coalition of parties is needed to form government. The parties must reach a compromise on policy and this is more likely to have broader appeal. (In countries dominated by two parties, the idea of multi-party coalitions can be thought of as a weakness instead of a strength.)

Voting is a method to determine the majority. Thus, voting always has a point if you have an opinion. If you don't, it is pointless.

Who knows what the majority is until after the vote. Don't believe the polls. They are always off.

OK you get the idea.
You have to vote to establish a majority and it also gets you thinking about answers to issues that are of concern.
I personally think we should have a vote tax of say $100.00 assessment for not voting nothing for voting.
Dang it it's your duty, not a privilege. You owe it to the rest of the nation to participate.

*It is your civic duty as an American*
*Out of respect to all who have sacrificed their lives and fought for the right for the freedom to choose who we want to lead and govern our country*
* Because If enough people think voting is pointless then, very low turnout at the polls may not be an accurate reflection of the will of the people*
*Affirming one's allegiance to the political system*
*To express support for a candidate, although, it may not achieve any outcome*
