Just as Jesus was saying in those verses, we show our love by our obedience. If we really love Him and really appreciate what He did on the cross, that shouldn't be a burden.
Even in the Old Testament, God mad it clear that obedience is more important than sacrifices. Saul lost his throne because he didn't obey God. God told him not to take any spoils from the battle yet he spared the best of the loot. When confronted, he said he was going to sacrifice them to God. That wasn't what God wanted.

The word used for "love" in the New Testament is most often an active verb. It is not the way we use the word to describe our feelings and emotions. Active love is demonstrated through actions--obedience. It is the same way with "belief" in the Bible. Belief without actions is not belief at all. So both love and belief will result in actions and obedience. Someone who claims to love God yet lives in disobedience is just mouthing words.
So then, love is expressed through obedience.
We recognize this principle in our lives as well. We can say we love someone, but if those words aren't backed up by loving actions, who will believe us?

Hi Eric T.,
The two kind of go hand-in-hand. But if you had to compare the two i supposed love would be more important because God's love is greater than our disobedience at times.
Here Jesus is simply teaching that to we show our love for God by obeying Him.
Obeying God isn't just doing what He says- but it's also doing it with the right heart. IE: Someone could go to church every week and have a bad attitude and we could say he's obeying a rule but not loving. (The Phraisees were a good example of this).
Hope that helps.
Kindly,
Nickster

Is desired by the LORD more than sacrifice.
1 Corinthians 13:13
But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

I think in some way there are both equally important. If you love Jesus then you will be obedient to Him. And if you are obedient to Jesus it shows your love for Him. Your love for Him makes you obedient to His word, your obedience to Him makes His love reside in you.

they go together
God commands us to love Him
and loving God is worked out in living a life pleasing to Him
interestingly many commands of God are to emotions

How can you say that you love if you do not obey? It is love that is the greatest. All of the law and prophets exist because of love. Obedience can only happen because we first love.

In first Samuel, Saul sacrificed without Samuel...and God was angry.
Obedience is commanded. Understanding is optional.

I sure think so. That's why I'm not Christian.
Love has nothing to do with obedience. That's call servitude, which one may do out of love, but one can also love without being obedient.
It's the desire of any loving parent, to raise children who do not need you.

Obedience is how we show our love to God. It is also how we show that we trust God to know what is best for us.
