I am offered a course to take a Foreign Language class next year. (Eighth grade). My choices are Spanish 1, French 1, and Japanese 1. This is for a full year.

I have a Colombian friend who can speak Spanish, so she could teach me anytime... Also, my friends say that Spanish will help me the most.
My friends said that French was really really hard. One friend also said that French will help me the most...second to Spanish.
Japanese? Haven't heard much. But I do enjoy Japanese anime and manga...

SO WHICH SHOULD I TAKE?

spanish, because it's the easiest among the three and you said that you have a friend who can speak spanish, with that i think you can learn in no time..

but japanese is a really nice language and fun to use. and it's not complicated unlike french. because i think most words are pronounce by the way they are spelled. (except for "desu", "masu" and etc.)

but then again. it's your choice. if you don't want to have a hard time then choos spanish

They are all like top 10 as far as widely spoken. But they all have their own little qwerks. Chinese (tons of dialects, main one is Mandarin), English, and Spanish are the top 3 languages in the world. Spanish - I'm gonna assume you live in the US so you can probably estimate the advantages of that yourself, but also know there's lots of other Spanish speakers here in the US. Japanese - Japan is the 2nd largest economy in the world after the US, they export lots of high-tech stuff and have large control of the automobile market, and pioneering robotics German and French - You can research the rest yourself as I don't know what you're looking for, but keep in mind to compare quirks of learning each language. Spanish, French, and German would be a lot easier in most ways for an English speaker to learn due to similar backgrounds of the languages and most English words have Germanic or Latin roots. Chinese is a simple language in some ways but can be complicated in others. Grammar is not the same but pretty similar to English. You also have to learn the writing, which is hard but is not as hard as it may seem. It just takes time. Tones are also important as they can mean the difference between 1 word and another word that have the same sound. Japanese - easy pronunciation mostly, though grammar will be WAY different from English. Grammar will almost seem reversed to an English speaker, no plurals, and no masculine/feminine stuff. Writing has 3 systems. One is katakana and hiragana, they represent sounds like English. The other uses chinese characters called kanji. All are used together.

JAPANESE by far. Its a language which if you can read and write it will get you a far better job someday than if you speak spanish (which millions in the usa do) or french (which nobody does but there is little commercial activity with france and canadians all know it if they come from eastern canada.
Japanese is a very difficult language but the time and effort will pay off some day. GO GET IT, I did, studied for 6 years, but unfortunately was in my40s when it for the first time was offered anywhere in the area I live in. Wish I could have got it when you can get it

I'd go with French. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn spanish if you live in the americas, maybe no other ones to learn french. And French is still a relatively big world language. It's also the most beautiful one in my opinion. Japanese is very tough and has limited use unless you are in Japan or working with Japanese people.

I'd take Spanish. It's certainly the easiest of the three, and is spoken by far more people in the world. French is somewhat difficult, but compared to Japanese, it's a walk in the proverbial park!

I would take the Spanish....having a friend that can speak the language will make it much easier to learn and will be easiest to remember later. (And French and Spanish are very closely related...if you can speak one you can usually figure out the other.)

unless you are Japanese, are planing on speaking Japanese to someone, or are planning to go to japan, that would be useless to take.

Spanish will help you alot, but it can get confusing at times. plus as you said, your friend can teach you if you feel you really want to know the language.

French will also become useful to you, and i find french the easiest.

I hope i helped!!!

Spanish, it will make life really smooth.
You will undoubtedly get into a situation when u have to converese with a person who speaks nothing but spanish.
French doubt it, and japanese is fun, but not really useful.

Go for Spanish. I took French in high school and college and only used it once in Canada. French is a good bit harder and you will probably never use it.

Meanwhile, I have had to learn Spanglish to talk to the maids and yard workers. At least it gives them something to laugh about. :-)
