I think that in the UK you can put the signs up...BUT... if your dog happens to bite someone they can sue you because you are advertising that you have a dog that you know you have to be aware of...

It's a sticky wicket so you would be best asking possibly the CAB or even the police for advice...

If you put up a sign which actually says 'BEWARE OF THE DOG' you are actually admitting that you have a dog that could bite etc, however if you put up a sign with a pic of your dog which says something like 'I LIVE HERE' then that is permissible, I have one which says '3 German Shepherds live here' on it, you have to be careful with the wording, the one you suggested is a good one as well as it just implies that the dog is faster! I have to say this though, for a good many years I had a sign on my house which had a pic of a snarling GSD saying 'BREAK IN, MAKE MY DAY!!' I liked that one, and no-one ever said anything, if they had I would have bluffed my way and said I didn't realise it wasn't allowed.

I live in the UK and we have a sign with a funny ,doggy pic. and the words WATCH OUT BORDER COLLIE ABOUT. We have a collie but you can get these signs for all breeds. I got it in Pets at Home but I've seen them in other shops. Our dog is just a pup and I'm worried about someone leaving the gate open . We had the same sort af sign for our old dog just so people knew there was a dog there I don't think it implies that the dog is dangerous.

You have to be a little careful about putting beware of the dog or similar as you are implying that your dog is dangerous, and may be liable if someone is bitten. What you want is something that says Caution I live here (A more gentle warning) or similar.

There is someone on Ebay that has many different dog signs. It may be worth contacting him

well, the wording will be the problem.

i know if you use 'guard dog' then you can be done if the dog bites anyone as a guard dog is required to have a handler at all times.

i would think something along the lines of:
CAUTION (doggy pic) LIVES HERE

then you are not saying the dog is dangerous or will bite, but advising people that there is a dog on the premises....anyone with half a brain should then realise they need to take care and if they get bit, it is their own daft stupid fault.
if my dog got a burglar and he tried to sue i would hope the judge used common sense and fined the burglar plus extra to pay for a nice juicy steak for the dog for doing his job.

I was told this. If you display a Beware of The Dog sign you are telling people your dog is something to be afraid of and it is your responsibility for having a "dangerous" dog. You are better to display a sign telling people there is a dog but not to Beware.

Its legal, but if a burglar gets bitten they can sue you; because you admit that your dog is dangerous!
For the same reason you should avoid using 'warning' or 'danger' in the poster.
You can make your own on your pc! Just use the words 'I Live Here'. That way you are alerting people to the fact there is a dog on the premises but without admitting any liablity.

My jack russel got a burglar once, he got steak for dinner that night :)

Not sure in the UK, but here in Ohio where I live .. they advise you against it. By putting up a beware of dog sign up you are saying you dog will bite, When they do bite you are responsible cause you knew your dog will bite..If they bite and you didn't have a sign up you can play stupid and say I didn't know my dog would bite. You have a better chance getting out of trouble lol..

To answer your question. Listen to this humorous Notice.
Few doors away from us a nice family have this sign and it is not breaking any laws. """""SOD THE DOG""""""BEWARE OF THE KIDS""""""""""".Now if an attempted intruder was bitten by their dog, well they are covered by saying we did not warn or say our dog will bite strangers entering our """"""" But in reality any one with common sense would know that there is a Dog present on the premises.
Best Wishes.
ACR.

I recently read that someone here in the US was sued and LOST because the courts ruled that his "beware of dog" sign proved that he knew his pet was dangerous. Don't know if it's true but we replaced our sign with one that says "warning strange dog". Now people know we have a dog but can't say we knew she was dangerous. Take it from this mailman it's nice to know there is a dog around!
