I recently bought a new computer, I was wondering what computer program would be best for deleting everything out of my old computer. From programs to history and etc.
Thanks

Deleting files or even a simple reformat will NOT permanently delete all your information. The easiest and quickest way to do this is to write your drive to zeros (versus a simple reformat which does not completely clean the drive). That wipes a disk completely clean of ALL data. For future reference the same holds true when someone reformats to get rid of a nasty virus or trojan...while it might clear it, unless you write to zero's before reformatting you are leaving data on the drive.

You don't need a program to do this, but you boot up with the restore CD that came with your computer. I would explain exactly how to do it, but it varies by computer brand. For example, if you have a Gateway, you boot off the CD then run GWScan and the option is in there. I would suggest Googling the brand of your old computer and the phrase "writing to zero's." (Unless it happens to be a Gateway lol).

There are programs that say they do this, but I've heard mixed reviews on how successful they are. I recall hearing about this one, http://www.gregorybraun.com/CleanUp.html, and bookmarked it to try as it also let's you clean individual folders, and I was going to try it for that, but haven't gotten around to it. The problem with this, or any program, is that there is no easy way to be certain it worked, whereas the method I described leaves nothing, and you know you know all is gone. If you are selling or giving away your computer you will have to reinstall an OS on it of course, if you do that. But it would be my suggestion...I'd rather be safe than sorry with my personal data.

Good luck!

You can simply delete all files in the C Drive, or you can erase it all by deleting your profile (user name) and that will delete all personal files. You can do that under the control panel and User Accounts.
