I've been to Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam, but I waited until 50 years after the shooting stopped.

That was a REAL battle, not carpet bombing followed by bulldozing the trenches in over the heads of quaking peasants.

My father flew in Bomber Command in WW2: 35 missions with 576 squadron at a time when the odds of surviving such a tour were very minimal.

My sister in law is in Dili, East Timor, where there's a lot of on-and-off rioting and a possible civil war in the making.

Really? That must have been interesting. My family is from Vietnam and I hear about it all the time. Most people said that it's haunted because of all the unneccessary deaths. My uncle was killed my VC's, he was only 13 and they jumped him and left him in a bathroom to rot. My aunt's husband died from a mine-bomb.

But when my mom tells stories about the escape, it always feels like I'm there in the jungle, in the middle of the night relying only on the moonlight to guide me to the boat.
