There has been a lot in the news lately about red wine being good for you. With so many things being bad for us...it's nice that something enjoyable is actually good for us.

Flavonoids from the skins and seeds of red grapes are the key to wine being good for you. These flavonoids lower your risk of coronary heart disease by reducing your LDL or bad cholesterol levels. At the same time these flavonoids actually increase your HDL or good cholesterol levels and decrease the likelihood of blood clotting.

Scientists believe that there may be other health benefits from red wine. A recent study discovered that an antioxidant in the skins of red grapes, called resveratrol, may inhibit the growth of tumors in some cancers. It’s possible that resveratrol can help treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as well and new studies are on the way.

Are some wines better for you than others? Again, the answer is, “Yes!” Researchers at University of California at Davis have concluded that full-bodied dry red wines contain the highest levels of flavonoids and provide the greatest benefits. The number one wine for supplying the most flavonoids is Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir also ranking highly. Sweeter wines and white wines have less flavonoids and are less beneficial.

How much should you drink? Moderation is the key. Women should drink 4 ounces of red wine daily with a meal and men 4-8 ounces.

Pour yourself a glass of red wine and drink to your health. Cheers!

Red wine helps w/ digestion and helps lower cholesterol, but the best red wines to drink for this (as no red wine is considered equal, contrary to popular belief) are actually southern French wines & Italian wines.

Red wine gets its rich, ruby hue from antioxidant polyphenols, which may be the secret to its heart-healthy power.

A new Greek study found that arteries relaxed immediately after a single glass of alcohol-free red wine almost as much as they did following a serving of the real thing--by 6.1 and 10.5%, respectively--in 15 people with atherosclerosis (arteries blocked by plaque).

Blood vessels need to stretch with each heartbeat or blood pressure rise, and this raises the risk of obstructed arteries, which lead to heart attack and stroke. Polyphenols may help nip that process in the bud, experts say. Find plentiful polyphenols in juice made from Concord grapes as well as in green, black, and oolong tea.

Yes, red wine is good for you.....not only good for your heart health, and full of anti-oxidants to prevent cancer, but it ALSO, according to the Amercian Association of Dental Health, prevents gum disease.

It also aids in digestion, the tannic acids (similar to those found in teas) help reduce cholesterol.

Medical study results found in the journal Atherosclerosis, suggest that the polyphenols found in red wines may lower both heart attack and stroke risk.
