Open-cell foam pyramids with a rectangular base glued to the inside walls pointing into the box, which should be made of a dense material. One or 2 layers of drywall would be a good choice, perhaps a layer of corrugated cardboard between the layers, or particle board would be a decent second choice. Both are pretty cheap, $10-20 per 4ft by 8ft sheet from Home Depot or other building supply place.

This is approximately how anechoic chambers are built. I just did some work inside of a couple of them recently, and was surprised at how effectively they absorb sound. What surprised me was that these particular chambers were designed specifically to absorb electromagnetic radiation (so the foam they used was a type that is electrically conductive), yet incidently absorbed sound as well.

Feel free to email me if you need more info.

Best Wishes,
Gary

NEW- Okay, I see your additional post. How about a layer of 1/2-inch drywall (definitely a home-material because it's what walls are made of), then glue in at least 1 layer of a heavy carpet.
