sounds like you're on the right track, but you need to praise and reward him for it so that he knows it's a good thing.
1. Use your command, "Gimme Paw"
2. Pick up his paw in your hand.
3. Praise and reward him with his paw in your hand.
Do this a few times.
4. Next, try the command and wait to see if he does it.
5. Give the command once and wait about 5 seconds. If he doesn't do it, pick up his paw and praise him.
Eventually he will pick it up. Just remember to praise. Cut back on the rewards (especially if it's food) so he doesn't think he'll get food all the time. Also, try avoid repeating the command or he'll think you have to say it 3 times before he supposed to do anything.

All the above answers sound really good! I would try the reward system and then wean him off of the treats eventually. Or reward with short playing like a fethcing ball or tug-o-war for jsut a few seconds. Get him really excited to learn first. Mix it up with play (if he's a paly-motivated doggie). Just remember that in training, it really only takes dogs 3 times to understand a behavior. If there's something in your behavior that might get a certain desired behavior, then that'll stick with him. Vice versa for an undesired behavior. It's hard to undo what is already done. Possibly he might associate the word or action with something bad from the past. You could try changing the training word. Good luck!

it seems that it is not that he is not listening but that he doesnt not know what you mean or want. This is my recommendation and how i taught my dog to shake-
Say "shake" or "paw" whatever you want the command to be
Pick up his paw very deliberately hold it for a few seconds
Put it down
Give him a treat
Praise him
Repeat this again and again
Untill he picks his paw up on his own

do you use some type of reward system? do you use more than one word commands?
you take his paw and say shake, and give a treat at the same time. do this atleast 5 mins a day. then when he understands the concept, cut down on the treats. find a treat that he really really loves.
this works very well.

I am going to be honest with you. I taught my lab how to shake but now I wish I had not because now everytime he wants something he paws at my arm. It was cute when he was little but now that his paw is big and his nails are sharper is doesn't feel so good. You might want to rethink that trick. Teach him to catch things in mid air. My lab loves doing that.

You have to actively take the paw for him to learn it. Right after you say "gimmie paw" grab his paw, shake it like crazy, and give him a treat right away. He'll get the idea eventually.

Grab his paw and shake it. Keep repeating until he's fully awake. When he's paying attention shake his paw and give him a snack or something good (only a little bit). Keep repeating until he starts shaking back. Then give him a larger amount of a snack or something good. This will give him the idea that if he shakes back, something good will come back.

I use a clicker (buy at petsmart for $2) and food. I will tell my dog "shake" immediately pick up his/her foot and click and give treat. Keep doing this each day for about 10 repetitions. When your dog starts to lift his/her foot give a click and a treat. Keep doing this every day until he/she actually does it.(you can also say good dog and treat instead of the clicker, but the clicker is quicker) Make sure you do this when you dog is hungry. Good Luck this wiorked for mine.
