To be honst I think it mainly depends on where you want to go. For example I sell holidays to Southern Africa and it is best to book in advance to get the perfect itinerary all confirmed at first choice properties. My sister company organises holidays to Greece and has some surplus seats available in May / June and may consider selling them cheaper sooner rather than later to ensure most seats / rooms are occupied. I believe last minute sales is slowly dying out because companies are checking their occupancy further in advance. However there will always be an element of last minute inventory that you may pick up cheap but it could be unnamed accommodation. Also monitor the prices you may notice a pattern.

The saying the early bird catches the worm is quite true :o)

I would book when I find the right price that fits my budget.
It could be 6 months before. If you are flying you want to pick the most convenient times to travel. I only like non-stop flights. So that would be a factor for me. If the price was right and the conditions to my liking I would book 2 months out.

Good Luck and have a great trip

Sometimes some airline places need a reservation a few months in advance, but sometimes, a lot of people cancel at the last minute and that could be the best time to save your hard earned money on a trip anywhere, but you also have to think about where you are traveling from and where you are going to.
