Many people have a lot of opinions, differing and the same, on ear cropping. Online and off. It seems it's been a pretty hot topic in the dog world last couple of years. So for a research paper for English, I wanted to take a look into cropping opinions coupled with the same person's opinion of PETA.

So - what's your opinion of cropping a dog's ears? And why do you believe it or why have you come to that conclusion?

Secondly -- what's your opinion on the orginization PETA? Bad, good, hate, love, should be destroyed, should be put on a pedastal?

Thanks for your time!

Cropping: I think if you plan on SHOWING your dog, then by all means if you know what your doing and go to the right vet thats fine.
But if I were to go buy a Boxer ( or other dog that usually has its ears cropped/taildocked) and have it as a COMPANION, I would just tell the breeder to not bother cropping/tail docking. I would love the dog as it was naturally meant to be.

PETA: I heard that a couple members from PETA have been arrested for animal cruelty? .. I like the idea of getting the word of animal cruelty out .. but the way they do it is very .. i cant even think of a word. I really dont like their organization.

Hope that helped!

I was a Vet tech for 17 yrs and we did crop some dogs ears. I think as far as elective surgery goes, it is the most gruesome, bloody surgery and probably the most painful for the dog. I mean, the ear is literally cut off. That being said, cropping needs to be done when the dog is about 11 weeks. Much older than that you have a hard time getting them to stand, but more important, they do not heal as fast.
I dislike PETA. What they say and what they actually do is completely different. They are not animals best friend, as they advertise.

Cropping is unnecessary if your dog is only a pet.

If the dog is going to be doing some kind of work like guard duty, or may be in fights a lot. Those ears need to go or they become a liability.

Come to think of it, circumcision is done to keep clean down there. Long eared dogs get ear infections all the time. This happens because not enough air gets in there and bacteria grows in the warm moister. It's not as cruel as it's made out to be. It does serve a purpose in hygiene too.
Circumcision isn't mandatory either.

PETA: I don't know anything about them really. As fare as caring for animal rights go, why not. I don't think that their right about everything.

I know that cropping is done for dogs that 'show' for a living, as well as for avoiding infections. I'm not totally against cropping for legitimate medical reasons, although the whole cropping just for show show thing, I still don't really agree with.

As for PETA, I think they started out as a fairly legitimate group with a well-meaning cause; unfortunately, they've become the Jerry Springer of the animal rights world and have become a parody of themselves. I don't take them seriously at all.

1. I think ear cropping (and tail docking) is cruel and unneccesary. It serves no purpose aside from the arbitrary cosmetic one and puts the animal under the stress of surgery and recovery.

2. As for PETA, although they at times take things too far, they serve a purpose. They bring animal rights issues into the public eye with their over-the-top stunts and zealot attitudes the way that more mainstream animal rights organizations cannot. An animal group quietly lobbying their state representatives to pass laws to improve conditions for animals on factory farms doesn't attract media attention like a 60 foot billboard of Pamela Anderson wearing a lettuce-leaf bikini. While PETA at times comes off as clownish and extremist, they do increase awareness of animal rights issues.

I have many opinions on this subject..

First of all, I don't really approve of cropping a dogs ears, it doesn't make them look 'cooler' and it's just costing you money.

However, if your putting a dog in a show or using it for fighting (I DO NOT approve of dog fighting BTW) then I agree that they should be cropped.

Also, if you own numorous dogs, then getting them cropped would be a good idea. My dogs always go for eachothers ears and one has had stitches before when the others were playing too rough with him.

PETA is basically full of crap. They ***** at everybody who disagrees with them and I doubt very much that they 'care' about animals..

PETA is a terrorist organization, they do not truly look out for animal wellfare but use media and celebrity to create hype to serve their own agenda. They will attack veterinarians and vet students (they very people who love and protect animals daily).

As for ear cropping: Most breed association no longer require it for show standard, so it is not necessary to do, however some breeders and showers do it for tradition. Secondly, there is a growing number of vets who wont do it, or who dont know how to. It is more painful and difficult to preform then tail docking and only serves a cosmetic purpose (some dogs have thier tails docked (caudectomy) because they have injured it or damaged it (or the owners kid wont stop pulling it)). Personally, as an upcoming veterinarian i would feel uncomforatable doing it because i dont know how to and dont feel that it is necessary anymore.

Cropping is a fashion statement, it's done by professional vets so I don't know how harmful it is, I can't imagine it's any worse than your friends piercing and tattooing themselves and it's for the same vain reasons, as for PETA their in it for the money, they get a lot of funding from Hollywood types, if they didn't think they could make a buck off it they would soon disband.

cropping is an interesting thing. i would say to do it if you were showing your dog or if the breed is used for work. if not, then what's the point of doing it? the dog is not used to fight?

as for PETA, they are only out there for themselves. they are only there for their own purpose and stick their fingers in their ears when others try to protest them.
