Females go into heat about every 6 months. and the heat cycle lasts for 21days.
The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.
The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.
Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.
Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.
While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. It I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

Heat cycles depend on the dog and its female ancestory. On average the heat cycle lasts anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks and some can go up to 4 weeks. Heat occurs usually twice a year every 6 to 8 months but some Chis only come into heat once a year.
To tell when they are ready to be introduced to the male all you need to do is scratch her back right at the base of her tail. She will bend her tail over to the side and arch her 'swollen part' upward & outward in preparation for male to mount.
This is when you would allow the male to do his thing, if both are experienced dogs everything will go as planned but if one is new to it you may assist in holding either dog by its sides until the tie happens to steady the pair.

Good luck.

The heat cycle for dogs is 3 weeks. You dog will come back into heat every 6 months after the first season.
Some dogs will come back into heat in as little as 4 months and others around 8 months. As a precaution it is wise to keep an eye on her.
If you are not planning on breeding you should have her spayed.
