I agree with princess, freecycle is going to be your best bet.
Most freecycle groups have a rule that you can't post a "wanted" until you have first posted an "offer" of something, you surely have something laying around you can offer to someone for free... it can be small (a box of envelopes), used (some old dishes), or whatever. I am betting you will get at least one answer to a wanted post, be sure and say whether you want a film or digital camera ... and remember you are being gifted with something, so it may be older or whatever, but I have gotten amazing things on freecycle, including a laptop computer.

Be wary of the email and internet offers you see offering you a Canon Rebel and the like. While these are legal offers ... the conditions in which you actually get one take a lot of work and are also contingent on 3-6 people you refer following through on the offer as well ... all in a period of 90 days or so. Also, in the fine print, it usually says something along the lines of "we reserve the right to substitute an item of equal value or a refurbished item". Read all the fine print before you decide to do one of these.

Just remember a camera is worth what you pay. That said, every now and then you see offers for a free camera when you subscribe to a magazine, open a bank account, etc. Those cameras are usually junk, though.

Try to find someone who is moving up to a better camera, and ask if you can have their old camera. I gave a pocket digital camera to one of my sisters when I bought my DSLR.
