I have jury duty this week and have learned I will pay federal tax on the money I earned. I am proud to do my civic duty (and I am a freelancer) but then you are taxed! I think that law is asbolutely absurd! Anyone agree?

Yes, it is considered income.

Absurd, I'll grant you. But Congress includes any payment for services to be income. No different than those who work for government agencies, or those who work in the military.

I hate to say it but, no... considering how we get raped by all sorts of different taxes it only makes sense that it happens with money earned on Jury Duty... All money earned, no matter what it is, is considered some sort of income and is therefore taxable. Since we are being paid by the government for jury duty it might make more sense for them to take the tax out before giving it to us and save us the trouble of filing it. Unfortunately, like some other things, it is done inefficiently.

I'll definately agree that is is absurb but how all other income is taxed it does make some sort of sense...

Yes, I agree. We're taxed on everything else though, so why not jury duty.
