If you need to do a family tree for school, you probably need to talk to your family. Due to privacy concerns, information about people who may still be alive is not found on internet genealogy sites. You have to figure out a few generations on your own (your birth certificate, your parents' marriage certificate, interview your grandparent, etc) far enough back to get to the people who are indexed online.

If you only need a few generations, it's possible that you won't even find anyone online.

I would try FamilySearch.org if I were you. I found people as recent as my grandparents on there. (But only on one side of the family, my mom's side it's only great-grandparents and farther back.)

familysearch.org, rootsweb.com. If you go to your local library they should have ancestry there and you can use it for free at the library. They also have heritagequest to use for free. Try using cyndislist.com for other links.
