My girlfriend is getting married in the fall, her fiance has very bad credit. She is worried that it will effect her credit. I told her that as long as she does not open any accounts together with him she should be safe.....?? Is this true? Thanks for any info!

You gave her correct advice. The only time it will effect her credit is if they apply for a loan jointly. Or if she adds him as an authorized user to one of her credit cards. It will make it hard for them to purchase a home or car together until he gets his credit repaired.

One of the other responders made a good point about utilities, she should get them in her name and make sure they are paid on time.

Well yes she kind of does get his bad credit. It will effect whether or not they can buy a house or a car together. They may be stuck renting for quite a few years until his credit is clean or at least cleaner. And no of course she should not open any accounts with him.

You should advise her to get her fiance to go to a financial counselor with her. He or she would be able to help them manage their merging salaries and how to clean up his credit.

She will still have her own credit bureau and her credit will not be affected, but if she tries to take out a loan with her deadbeat fiance, they may run into some issues and have to pay a higher rate. In that regard it could affect her. But his bad credit will not affect her credit,

Yes. If she does not have any joint accounts or loans, then she should be fine. The only thing that might affect her credit is utilities. If they are in her name, they split, and he does not pay them before she has them shut off, this could affect her credit.

Married people are responsible for each other's debts. I'm not sure about debts that occurred before the marriage. She should talk to a lawyer.
