I had minor surgury this morning - I was given an IV of valium, then three other things. I came home and went to sleep, woke up and the fact of the matter is that I am just plain discombobulated. That was 12 hours ago - how long before this stuff wears off? I have to work early tommarrow and I need my wits about me. Am I expecting too much?

Valium is a long acting benzodiazepine with a half life of anywhere between 20-50 hours. Depending on how quickly your body metabolizes the Valium, you may need to take a day off of work tomorrow.

You should probably stay home anyway; it isn't too much to ask even if it was outpatient surgery. The drugs will probably worn off pretty much, but you gave us to few details to say for sure. You will still probably feel a bit off your game, tho'.

Everyone is different. It doesn't take much for me to get woosy and then when I had surgery it took days for it to wear off. I always have to take off work at least 3 days after minor surgery.

Good luck and I hope you get well soon!

Drink a lot of water to try to flush your system. It probably won't last too much longer.
