If you do an archive, saving users, all files that are saved to the user folder and not already damaged should be saved. But, of course, we are talking about the mysteries of computers here so good luck.

Bear in mind that if your songs are cataloged by iTunes, you will have a library database that lists all the songs but what you really need to be sure about is the location of all the actually song-name.mp3 or song-name.aac files. A similar consideration applies to iPhoto which catalogs photos but the actual files could be anywhere so find their location if you can and be sure they are either copied to a backup disk or in the user folder.

Have you tried starting up while holding the shift key all the while until you see "Safe Boot" on the screen? Sometimes that will solve the kernel panic. Also, try booting to the OS X install CD, click on the Installer or Utilities menu and open Disk Utility. Run the "Repair Disk" option. Then quit Disk Utility and restart. If all that is a no-go, maybe you should archive and reinstall, saving users.
