Hell realms... it's not a place that someone went along and constructed, it's something that the mind contructs (loosely, very loosely speaking) through the state of mind you get yourself into. Think of what you feel like when you're so contracted around your anger when you're really hot/angry... well we (again I'm speaking very loosely) believe that a certain state of mind can cause you to take rebirth (not from a momma kind, you just appear) in the state of mind you've created for yourself.
It's really a long hard topic because you have to tear apart some of the concepts, and understand them, of what it's like to go through the bardo state between death and "rebirth".
You can also take rebirth in deva realms where you live like a goddess/god according to your karma and state of mind, although it's not like the "heaven" Christians speak of, because when you burn off the good karma that gets you there, if you haven't attained enlightenment you immediately take rebirth in hell realms...
Your aversions and state of mind around them is what causes you to take various rebirths... so you create your own hells... if you achieve Nirvana (which is beyond description) then you don't go to "heaven" nor "hell" or any other kind of rebirth because you've transcended the states of mind that CAUSE you to "select" (so to speak) the wrong choices as you're going through the bardo of death...
Does this make sense? I can try to clarify further if you need... it's an intricate topic. Anyway the reason there are so many kinds of hell realms is because there are so many states of aversion/contracting around your sense of self... kinda like varying states of anger... like the difference between giving someone the finger on the highway after they just cut you off and/or running them off the road, shooting them or ignoring them and pressing on...

Naraka is one of the six buddhist realms. It is born of hatred and/or anger, and is a state of mind in which you lash out at everything and anything that tries to help or harm you. However, you are actually not hurting the people who you attack, you are just hurting yourself. I once read a story about a man in Tartaros, the deepest level of Greek hell, who was told to carve a symbol into the leg of a lamb. However, whenever he finished carving the symbol he had found that he had actually etched it into his own leg. Naraka is alot like this , you think that you are hurting someone else, then you realize afterwards that you just hurt yourself, then you respond with more anger and hatred, and the cycle continues. That is the first type of naraka, called the hot naraka, the second type is known as the cold naraka. This state is born of arrogance, and is an internal cycle. Arrogance creates a superiority complex which seperates us from other ideas and concepts, shutting us off to suffer in solitude, and waste away as we chisel down old ideas until they become stale and nothing is left. This results in a kind of stagnant mind that just recycles a smaller and smaller pool of ideas...

Sadhu Vin;good answer.
I would like to tell a story to further support Vin's answer.
"Once there was a brave and intelligent warrior. One day this warrior went to a old monk and asked him,"Where is hell"?
The old monk answered the warrior with lots of abuses. The warrior lost his temper and drew his sword to kill the monk.Just before the sword touch him,the monk shouted,"Now you are in hell".
The warrior being very intelligent realized his mistake and apologied to the monk. Then the monk answered:"Now you are in heaven".
So,as Vin has answed, hell and heaven is really a state of mind.
Metta to all.

I used to be into Buddhism and during that time, I was told something really interesting about Yamantaka, the entity that in the Tibetan conception is the Master of Hell. They believe Yamantaka isn't himself a manevolent deity like Satan in the Catholic pantheon, rather he's a benign entity who just happens to be doing the diritest job in the cosmos. Yamantaka to them is a sort of Divine Prison Warden, a stern but ultimately compassionate entity whose true intention is to save the souls of those in his keeping, not punish them.
Compare this conception to the brutality of the Protestant and Islamic deity. Their supreme deity, Jehovah-Allah rejoices in the torment of the souls in Hell. By Buddhist standards this naked sadism marks Jehovah-Allah as a demonic entity, not an Enlightened Being.

there is also in Greek and roman mythology what is contemporary to the christian hell, in Greek the lord of Hades, is Hades, and in roman the lord of Hades is Pluto.
Christians also use the word Hades, for hell.
