I have no punching bag, no equipment. Does punching the air really help you get stronger, or like build muscles?

It won't help you get stronger or build any appreciable muscle mass. In the beginning, you'll be able to increase your speed and endurance by punching the air, and work on your technique a bit, but it won't make you very much stronger and the small gains you do experience will plateau in a few weeks.

However, it can benefit your muscular endurance (which is distinct from your cardiovascular endurance) and keep you flexible and limber.

Also, it is the best way to learn how to put several punches together to form combinations, at least initially.

For the sake of convenience, it allows you to engage in some training without wrapping your hands.

In short, shadow boxing is a valuable activity and every boxer does it, regardless of level, but it is only a part of a well-rounded program of training.

Punching the air develops speed only. There is nothing wrong with that type of speed training. But don't forget the heavy bag, speed bag, and other punching equipment.

Punching the air (Shadow Boxing) works on technique.
Before I jump in the ring or work the bag I shadow box to work on my technique, speed, slips & weaves. It's also a good way to work on your combo's such as jab, jab, hook, uppercut.
It's also a good way to warm up before getting into the real work hardcore workout.
It won't build muscle, you can build muscle by doing sit ups, bench dips, push ups at home or try doing them with weights.

punching the air(that's hilarious), it's called shadow boxing and it's a great workout for a fighter. it helps working on your combinations, helps build muscle, gets you loosened up and you can build up a sweat it's just like any other excercise like the jumping jacks running in place and alot of that taebo some fighters shadow box 8 rounds a day.

No it won't help you get stronger. It will however help you improve your speed and technique but it can only go so far. You need strength training and bag work too.

It's called "shadow boxing", it's a hand eye co-ordination exercise. It doesn't do a lot for strength, but it does improve your accuracy and speed.

All is true but it also teaches you to imagine. Imagine your opponent's chin, his stomach, etc
