As far as abstract painters, and art in general, it really depends on what you like in particular.
My favorites are Picasso's guitarist(during his blue period),
Monet's haystacks are particularly beautiful in that the light actually moves with the painting,
and in general the Hudson River school artists.
I also like Jack Vettriano's works.
