It's for everything! I download music mainly, but also movies and software occasionally.
Be careful when downloading software though, remember you're downloading stuff directly from someone sitting in another computer. Programs might contain spyware/virus.

Yes, you're right. It's also used for movies, pictures, data, and even programs such as Sony Acid Pro. Which I use to create my music.
