u see the reason i put this question up, because right now in Germany two journalists went to the artic to explore the conditions of the Artic and brought two polars bears with them who were thought to be abodoned by there mother and after this discovery they decided to make a place of their natural habitat at the zoo, where they are being raised, so my teacher split us teams and decided to do a debate of this and my group is told to argue on polar bears staying in the artic rather than the rest of the worls and places SUCH... as Canada or Germany...I am so going to fail in this....HELP....

Polar bears were never in Antartica they are in the Artic. Polar bears are found in Alaska, Russia and Canada. There is a good population around Churchhill Manitoba(Canada for those who don't know).

Now these two journalists should be charged for the capture of Wild Animals as the last time I checked they were journalists and not wildlife officers or technicians. So you can debate the legality of the Germans taking these Polar bears in the first place.

Also there are no polar bears in Germany so this artifical inclosure will simulate the artic but will fall short as they will not have the movement they would normally have and its alot colder in the artic than germany. The polar bears will slowy lose their wild untamed manner and life being enclosed as they will not beable to roam free and hunt for theiro own food. They will be given hunks of food thrown at them pumpped full of nutrients. This is unfair to the bears really.

I'd also argue WHY were these bears removed from their natural habitat? Just because the mother was not around does not mean the Journalists should have taken the bears. They are journalists NOT wildlife technicians. Also most people are scared to hear it but life is cruel some bears in the population have to die for the greater good of the species. So if that bothers you tree hungers too bad, you can't save everything. Natural selection needs to take its course otherwise species will end up with alot of bad genetics which will jepordize the survival of the speicies...

So the bears should have been left in the Artic, the German Journalists should be charged and given hefty fines and the bears should be released into the wild again as soon as possible.

Hope that helps

They live in Canada, that IS the Arctic. They do not live in Antartica because that is not where they evolved. They don't live in Germany because there are no seals in Germany. What kind of question is this?
EDIT - They evolved in the Arctic, the zoo habitat in Germany is artificial. Their diet consists mainly of seal, and their method of hunting is adapted to the conditions they find in the North. Despite their size, they are quite delicate animals and would quickly die if taken out of their natural home, unless people put a lot of effort into recreating that environment. Most polar bears live around Hudson's Bay in Canada, you can go on tours to see them. In the town of Churchill there is a polar bear jail, where bears that come too close to the town are held until they can be moved in the spring. Global warming is threatening their existence where they are, they would not do well anywhere else.

I would debate this on the issue of temperature differences. For one, what is the typical temperature of Germany compared to the arctic. Stress the fact that polar bears are greatly adapted for arctic conditions. Also look at the cost of keeping a polar bear in a zoo. Ask the question: Is this zoo going to bred these bears in the future? If not, then the polar bears should not be there.

Here are some websites with info.
From http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/people/staff/dunton/k12/Polar%20Bear%20Adaptations.htm
Polar Bear Adaptations
In the Arctic winter the predominant background color is white. The temperature is extremely cold so animals have adapted for survival. The polar bear looks white and this adaptation protects the bears from being seen by predators. The polar bear’s top fur is actually transparent, hollow hair shafts. There is a dense ‘woolly’ undercoat. (The bears also have a layer of blubber under their skin.) Air is trapped in the hollow hair shafts and this provides insulation for the bears. The hairs reflect the light so that the color of the bear looks white. The hair does not mat so that ice and water can be shaken off easily. The polar bear’s skin is black. Black absorbs light wavelengths so that the skin absorbs the warmth from the light and holds it instead of reflecting it away from the skin.

About a decade ago, the Columbus zoo, as well as other zoos, decided the polar bears and their habitats were too costly...$18 million exhibit the Columbus zoo plans to open in 2008...Multimillion dollar arctic habitats also have been added recently in Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

Why are there no polar bears in Antarctica? The distribution of all animals is a functionality of success and history. Having each and every thing you want is not any assure of being waiting to realize any element on the globe as quickly as you're there because of fact it could't be conceivable to get there interior the 1st place. Polar bears probable developed very at present (approximately 200,000 years to probably as long as 500,000 years in the past) from grizzly bears someplace off eastern Russia or the Alaskan Panhandle. they're completely based upon sea ice for their familiar habitat for buying their nutrition (particularly ringed seals and bearded seals). because of fact the worldwide's oceans in no way have been frozen from the north to the south, polar bears in no way have had the possibility to realize the Antarctic. Polar bears are reliable swimmers yet not reliable adequate to swim to the Antarctic. some species have wider distributions because of fact their habitats have been related at a while interior the distant previous. as an occasion, grizzly bears (additionally suggested as brown bears) stay interior the US, Canada, Russia, Spain, Italy or perhaps Norway! They crossed over a land bridge between Russian and Alaska. a similar is real for wolves, wolverines, lynx and a good form of alternative species. even although, polar bears might certainly like the Antarctic. interior the absence of polar bears, seals and penguins interior the Antarctic are actually not nervous of predators (different than leopard seals and killer whales). A polar undergo might have a good form of exciting and doubtless get very very fat! on the unfavorable edge, the seals and penguins could be devastated. Polar bears are extremely extra useful off interior the Arctic.

polar bears only live in the northern hemisphere. they DO live in canada and other actic places.

the reason they live there is very linked to the fact that they are polar bears at all. they have specially adapted to this environment and occupy the land-predator niche in the arctic habitat. their white fur and large size makes it possible for them to survive in the cold and snow, as well as hunt their prey. these advantages are not useful in non-arctic condistions. polar bears simply live where they can, and they can only live where they are suited.
