The African greys are no where near as loud as a cockatoo or a macaw, they can mimic both birds well but much more on a decent octave level.
They love to watch and learn and they are a very intelligent birds, so watch what you say around it. The one my friend has learnt to sound like his mobile tune in less than a fortnight. They do need a lot of attention and live forever but you'll have a humorous friend for life.

They are not as loud as a macaw or cockatoo as far as screaming goes but they are NOT quiet birds. They are loud and they chat all day. A parrot is not the ideal pet if sound is an issue. A better choice would be finches or a budgie.

I used to work on a pony yard and they had one in the house. It didn't skawk (spelling?) like most parrots, it was much happier mimicing things, mostly talking. It wasn't too load but he would carry on for hours.
It did a great job of freaking people out too. The family had a young son with a really spooky giggle and the bird used to copy it at the end of the day when we went into the house to use to bathroom. It used to ehco around the big dark house (huge converted barn with no one living in it during the week) and scare the **** out of us.
He also used to say 'walkies, walkies' and get the dog really wound up!

Ours is almost quiet. He talks all day but never screams. We also have a conure, a much smaller bird with a much louder scream. The grey never makes the same noise even with the same sounds. He also tells the conure to "shut up" in a normal spoken human volume when the conure makes too much noise.
In answer to your question, a grey is not a loud bird.

My brother has one. They are the most intelligent of the parrots supposedly. His can whistle the tune to the X Files/Close Encounters of there third kind etc. It doesn't screech much. His Blue Fronted Amazon on the other hand....what a racket that makes.
They are meant to have the mental capacity of a small child so need constant companionship & have been known to get jealous if someone else comes between them & the thing they have bonded with.

I have an African Grey and a Macaw and they're equally as loud. However, just like people, birds are individual and just because my African Grey is noisy it doesn't mean they all are. Perhaps your best option would be to try to re-home one known to be quiet. Best of luck!

I have a Grey, He mimics everything, so put him around another loud bird and he would sound just like it. He rings like the phone, makes the tivo noises constantly. I just got a sun conure who is sceaming now. My cockatiel died 3 months ago, and she was quiet.Greys are lots of work and you do not lock them up, and you buy them tons of toys and food. They eat fruits veggies, pellets, seeds nuts, Expensive!
