French fried potatoes, commonly known as French fries or just fries (North America) or chips (United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Commonwealth), are pieces of potato that have been cut into batons and deep-fried.
In areas where 'chips' is the common term, 'French fries' usually refers to a thinner variant (as in the U.S. the normal size, or as 'shoestring potatoes'). In North America 'chips' generally means potato chips (called 'crisps' in the UK), which are deep-fried very thin slices of potato. In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and some areas of the United Kingdom, 'chips' can mean either crisps, or French fried potatoes which are also called 'hot chips' or (in South Africa) 'slap chips' (IPA [slup]; 'slap' is Afrikaans for 'soft').
French toast is a popular breakfast food in North America, Europe and Hong Kong.
French toast is made with bread (generally pre-sliced) and eggs; some common additions are milk, water, or orange juice to thin the eggs, sugar, and spices such as allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon. Vanilla may also be added to the egg mixture. In restaurants throughout the United States and Canada, the bread is usually thick white bread made especially for use in French toast; when made at home, regular sliced bread is often used. Although usually served as a sweetly spiced dish, some prefer a savory version, seasoned with salt and pepper instead.
