People should go there only if they have specific skills to contribute, such as doctors or nurses, and/or if they can commit to a long time over there (2 years or so) so that they can learn enough about the people and the land to actually be of any use. Otherwise, you won't be able to contribute enough to offset the cost of your being there.

I think people all over the world need to be concerned about the situation in Darfur. We are all part of the human race and when we cease to care about what happens to our fellow man or turn our heads and pretend genocide is not happening, how can we possibly call ourselves human beings. Darfur is not in a situation right now where volunteers or the Peace Corps can go in. Unfortunately, there must be military action to stop the Janjaweed first. Without securing the area and establishing peace, volunteers themselves will be unsafe and ineffective.

I really think that everyone should try to get involved with helping Darfur. People should care that a man slaughter is happening in Africa, and they need our help.
