Because he's a compassionate and learned person who actually understands what Christianity is about. The Biblical literalists do not understand Christianity. If they did, they would know that Christ rebuking stringent literalism in the tale of the Good Samaritan.

Because he's smart, and probably did just as much research as any atheist.
It's too bad not all Christians are like him. He's one of my favorites on here.
