When Revelations was written, Christians were living in catacombs and being fed to the lions. It is written with a lot of symbolism and code so that only those living in the "underground" culture of Christianity, at the time, can understand it. Being the last book in the Bible one must fully understand the rest of the Bible, before even beginning to understand Revelations.

It is a mix of older stories. For example the 7 headed monster...thing... was a monster in earlier Pagan stories. Like everything else in the Bible, it is a twisted version of older myths. Twisted to support the Christians, and condemns everyone else.
