Yes an obese person can indeed train in Kempo, as a matter a fact Kempo would be excellent for an obese person because they would learn how to hit and kick very hard. What I mean is like with me I am 230 pounds, and I have the hitting and kicking power of a 230 pound person because I am training at that weight, granted I have been loosing weight, but since I started training at a heavyweight, even when I get down to 180 or so which is what I want to fight at, I will still have the power of a 230+ pound person.

By the way, even though I am loosing weight, with my training, my punches, kicks, elbows and knees are getting more powerful, this is natural when training in a combat sport. So yeah in my eyes you are at an advantage being obese, and Kempo will get you lean and quick. Dont get discouraged when you cant go full force or you have to stop in the middle of training, this is normal for anyone, not just an obese person. Go for it, I bet it will make you happier, not saying you are sad, but anytime you want to do something in life, go for it, dont wait to loose weight or gain muscle or anything, just go do it, right now.

Right now I say.

1 don't think about being obese
When you think about your problems they will only get worse
So the first step you need to have self confidence , Think of yourself as a Sexy Rock Star Noting else That is "Obese"
You need to forget about ever being obese because tomorrow you are going to wake up and CHANGE for the better
2 Get yourself a workout routine
Start Slow 15 minutes 1 week 30 minutes the next week
45 minutes the next week
then work up to a 1 hour a day for two weeks

3 YES you can do martial art
I suggest a martial art with action
Yea your thinking okay what ever but some kinds are really slow Kempo is great

Have fun you Sexy Rock Star

I practise Bushin Ryu in New Zealand which combines Kempo, aikijitsu and Okinawan style karate. I have been studying this art for the past 2 years... I have struggled with my weight for years but like you have been fascinated with the arts. My advice to you is to start going to a group fitness class like tai bo, to get your confidence up then find a friendly welcoming Dojo to train at. Go for it, I feel great now, have renewed confidence in myself and really enjoy training. I am not sure about american Kempo styles, but I am sure you will make the right decision on where to train if you trust in your instincts. Just remember to remain positive and think thin and the weight will drop off you!! Good luck.

Anyone can pay money and join a school but conditioning is very important and injuries will happen, I have had a broken bone, strained muscles, blood bruises, a cut lip and a really pretty black eye. I practice Karate (Shotokan) but we practice full contact with no padding (well after you reach a certain level). I would try to workout besides the Kempo, try to get yourself in better shape so that you will not injure yourself so badly, but expect injuries, they will happen.

If you want to try some sort of Martial Arts you would do yourself a favor to try to slim down, and be fit.

It is one of the code of ethics of many Martial Arts disiplines to keep your skill, and body fit.

Also it will help you in learning to disipline yourself, this will lead to good training practices.

This will help you develop your Art.

Don't say that about yourself. Even if you are, don't think about yourself as being obese. And of course you can! Martial Arts is a great way to lose weight!
