It all depends on how much "elbow grease" you put into it. How much you move around, how much lifting and bending and stretching.... It's actually not a bad idea to stretch first if you plan on doing some hard-core cleaning and you're not normally that active. Put on some music and shake your groove thing while you do it to burn even more calories.

Just be careful not to wear yourself out while you're huffing cleaner fumes, it's probably not good for your lungs. Keep the place well ventillated if you're going to be breathing hard while using cleaners.

Truthfully, any activity is better than no activity. Washing the car and walking the dog are way more exercise than watching tv. You can put some light weights on your ankles and wrists to give added muscle workout to your cleaning or dog walking activities. They sell a set for not too expensive at wal mart in the aisle with the dumbbells and pilates balls near sporting goods. They come with bars of weight that you put into the wrist/ankle bands so you can adjust how much weight it is. They're handy little thingies. You may even be able to get away with wearing them at work, depending on your job, so you can get more exercise into your busy lifestyle.

What makes a really big difference too is watching what you eat. Look at the nutritious value of things. Convenient food is normally high in sodium and calories, with not much nutrients.

Something high in calories without a lot of vitamins or nutritional value is empty calories, which means something you ate that your body can't use and will just end up stored in your luv handles or thighs. Switch out your usual snacks for fruit or whole grain treats. Try to avoid fast food and tv dinners, they are mostly empty calories, sodium and preservatives also. Making a simple change in your diet like that makes a HUGE difference in how effective your exercise will be. And drink lots of water, that makes a big difference in your health too. Your body needs that water in order to be able to use the vitamins you're eating.

You can actaully do the math on this one.

Check out a website that gives you the calculation, I don't know it for sure, but one calorie is about the amount of energy it takes to lift 50lbs up 6 feet.

Another way to think about it is..... every time you go up the stairs.... that's 2 calories. so to burn off a chocolate bar, you would have to climb the stairs 50 times....

Well it really matters on how much you weigh and how fast you are moving. The normal person burns 100 calories per hour walking. So if your scrubing away as fast as you can I'd say it's safe to bet on 100 calories per hour.

cleaning for an hour for a 140lbs person is 210-250calories.

so for four hours is 840-1000 calories really not much considering you can burn that in a fourth of the time with aerobics, cycling, running, kixkboxing, swimming ect...
