Why do triglycerides have a glucose-sparing effect?

Because triglycerides break down to fatty acids, which can be converted to acetyl-CoA that can then enter the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain. In this way, glucose is not needed (and is thus spared) to generate substrate for the Krebs cycle and ETC in order to produce ATP.
