Matthew 24:34
"Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."
According to Mark and Matthew, Jesus expected the tribulation period to occur before the last of his generation died out. Thus, a limit is given within which the prophecies are to be fulfilled. It should be noted that these "tribulations" were not fulfilled in the events of the years 66-73 C.E., the period of the First Jewish-Roman War. Jesus' own statement shows that the culmination of the "tribulation period" was to see the parousia, the second coming of Jesus (Mark 13:26; Matthew 24:3, 30), which certainly did not occur during the war nor subsequently.

Hmm, let's see...
First, your own bible says jesus would come back before the people he was talking to were dead. They're all dead, he didn't come back -- strike one.
Then, every friggin' year since then, some christian sect or another has predicted that THIS will be the year jesus comes back! Has he ever come back? Nope. Strikes two through 2007.
Finally, the entire idea of a guy who's been dead nearly 2000 years showing up again is ridiculous on its face. There's no evidence of any kind that anyone has ever come back from being dead (really dead), or that anyone ever will. It's a MYTH -- that's what we call wild stories that have no evidence to show they're true. Strike 2008.
You're out after 3 strikes -- I'd say you're way over your limit.
Peace.

Well let's see there are a few possible reasons.
1. Every generation since his death have said Jesus will return. They are like the boy who cried wolf! After a while no one will believe anything you say.
2. It is written in the bible "Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." Matthew 16:28
NOTE: THERE BE SOME STANDING HERE clearly refers to people that are present at the time this is being said. WHICH SHALL NOT TASTE OF DEATH . . . . Every single one of them is dead!
3. The bones of Jesus being found. Perhaps they are the actual bones perhaps they are not either way Jesus is NOT returning. Besides if he does I'm sure we can find the hammer & nails just in case he didn't learn from the last time he was here.
Oh don't act offended I'm only being honest. Just look at history and you'll see I'm right. ANYONE that tried to bring about a positive change to the world was killed! JFK, Martin Luther King Jr, just to name two!

Dont generalise by suggesting everyone doesnt take jesus serious.. I take him serious and im no Saint believe me but I love him and i believe everything he Did and Said especially his prophecys..Jesus prophesised his death and resurection. he said they will draw lotts for my cloths. When he was crucified the soliders drew lotts for his cloths. He said they will pierce my heart. The solider stuck a spear in his side.. He said not a single bone of his will be broken and none of his bones were broken during his torture and crucifixion.. He told them the Temple will be split in two and when he died the temple was struck by lightening and was split in two so why not believe the rest of his prophecies.. Jesus will come back i have no doubt about it. All the signs are there.. Jesus said '' They can forecast the weather by certain signs in the skys like a red sky but they refuse to see the signs I have foretold of my comming.. Lets be honest about it folks. The world is getting more evil, More and more people are turning away from God and the church. There are more wars and natural calamities than any time in history. Nation will rise up against Nation, There will be earthquakes in various places.. Oh yes I believe Jesus will return sooner then people think..

Because there are those of us who don't belive in Jesus. We don't believe Jesus is the son of God. We don't believe Jesus was the Messiah.
I for one, have actually read the OT, have discovered what it actually said, and found that Jesus does not fulfill the Messianic prophecies. And the prophecies that are claimed for him by Christians - most aren't even prophecies at all. Such as the 30 peices of silver. Not to mention the contridictions in the NT with the OT.
So, why would I take the second coming of Jesus seriously?

Because many are nonbelievers. You can't expect them to take it seriously. Jesus himself said even many christians would be totally taken by surprise.
I think we christians, if we have time can study end time prophecies, and see if it matches to current historical developments. I'm more concerned with the parts concerned with making a success of life here and now though.

Dear sm,
All people are spiritually DEAD unless God (Jesus) gives them "ears to hear" and saves them. The Lord also states in His word that He will come as a "thief in the night". And He will come as a thief for most of the world's population. However, look what the Lord says in 1 Thess 5:1-5 but focus on verse 4 in particular. For those who are truly saved (elect) Jesus wil not come as a thief. Please read 2 Peter 3 also because the Lord tells us what we'll see in the last days.

In response to the first answer, Methuselah lived about 989 years, so his generation was nearly 1,000 years, and that was similar for others, the generation of Jesus is over 2,000 years; this is the last era, there is no future era.
Why don't most people take his comming seriously, God said I will send strong delusion so that they shall believe a lie, and also says that in the last days people shall mock the flood. Also as it was in the days of Noah so shall it be in the days of the comming of the son of man (Jesus), etc...

Because they do not believe in Jesus. But when that glorious time comes ultimately everyone will confess Jesus as Lord, but it will be too late for non-believer...But what a glorious time for Christians.

It doesn't apply to me. I'm not a Christian. I'm not a part of Heaven, Hell, Jesus, or His angry Father. You may sit and pray for the Second Coming, but that really means you're praying for the world to end, right? That makes you evil, in my book. Your faith is an evil death cult. You are the enemies of free thought, democracy, and decency.
