Actually, I was raised an atheist, and my folks told me the facts as to how thunder and lightning worked. (At least as much as they could get me to comprehend age-wise.)
It didn't affect my view of heaven or God, as I came to Christ later in life.

I had been told as a child that lightning and thunder were the angels bowling in heaven.
Was a cute story to explain it and not make me so afraid of the loud noise, as thunder was when the angels got a strike.
At the time it made heaven seem like a real place with things I could relate to happening there.

G-d and the angels were bowling in heaven and the lighting was the points flashing on the screen and the thunder was the bowling ball and when there was a really big clap someone got a strike.

I wasn't. My dad told me that lightning was caused by warm currents in the air, and thunder was a result of the lightning. I was never afraid of thunder because of this, but I was terrified of lightning.

My parents told me that lightning and thunder were natural phenomena that had a scientific explanation and it was nothing to be frightened of. They then proceeded to show me books that explained just what thunder and lightning were. They have never tried to explain it by use of religion or mythology. Both of my parents are christians and I am an agnostic.

My parents were not atheists, maybe a little agnostic... When it came to things like this, they taught me about Mother Nature and her supreme control over the Earth. When I was interviewed for kindergarten the principal asked me when it snowed and I matter-of-factly answered "When Mother Nature wants it to!" On the day I graduated from high school that same principal reminded me of the answer I gave him as a 4 year old. ;-)

God and his angels were playing bowling. Thunder was the ball rolling down the lane, and the lightening was when they made a strike. It would actually make me laugh because I tried to picture people bowling in big white robes wearing sandals and having wings and halos. I still laugh about it actually.

I was told that thunder was God bowling, or God playing the drums.

Atheist here - catholic then. I don't recall being told anything! Except the truth, as told by a non-scientist to a small child. Assuming I asked.
Honestly, I don't think it was ever discussed.
Sorry, boring if honest answer.
