Eternal is the option of life that God granted all of his creation from the beginning.
Only if Adam and Eve eat of the forbidden fruit, were they going to lose their prospect of eternal life in the paradise earth.
They were not given "immortality", which would have meant that they would still be alive today. The first and only one to ever get it was Jesus.
The only thing that would or could have kept him from it would have been if for example he would have accepted Satan's offer of becoming the King of the world as seen at Matthew 4:8-11.
Because he remained faithful and perfect to the end; stayed the course set before him by his father, he was granted immortality from Yahveh or Jehovah.
If you look at Genesis 3:22, you'll notice that both are having a conversation where the inspired author seems to stop in mid-air from describing the location of the tree of life that would have allowed Adam to eat and live to time indefinite... but he didn't, which is why in God's day, a thousand years to men, Adam and Eve, had to die as promised by God who had told them: :"in the day that you eat of that tree (of knowledge of good and evil) you will die.
So they did, in His day.
In His wisdom, the Almighty knew that this was exactly how it all had to be down so that the most important issue in the universe, raised up by Satan, his arch-enemy, would be settled once and for all.
When that happens, after the last war of Armageddon and after the last test on mankind, all who survive will be granted eternal life and death will be a thing of the past as it itself will be buried at last.
The reason for this eternal life as opposed to "immortality", is that should anyone ever again, whether in the heavens or on the earth, was to start the uprise Satan had put us all through ever again; the Creator would be fully justified in destroying him so that he would die of what is called the second death...
Say it was a resurrected one that had to die again. There would be no resurrection possible for such a person.

1Timothy 6:16 speaks of Him as well saying:
the one alone having immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom not one of men has seen or can see.

To him be honor and might everlasting. Amen

Eternal life is life with God. This comes through righteousness and relying on Christ and his atonement when we fall and sin. Immortality is the state that everyone will be in after their body and spirit is reunited during resurrection. Because Christ was resurrected, we will all get this. Not everyone will receive eternal life.

While I admit there is a difference in meaning, as the first answerer puts it pretty well, I take objection to your saying "The Bible said... "
I think I know my Bible pretty well, but I've never seen where the Bible specifies that there is a difference.
