I've been all over the world during the 22 years I spent in the navy. I experienced few, if any problems. I always carried a phrase book and public transportation maps in English.

The biggest fear I had was of the police in countries noted for very high rates of government corruption such as the Philippines, Thailand, Panama, Columbia, Brazil and Mexico. I knew far too many guys who had money extorted from them by the police in countries like this.

I spent a month in Belgium a few years back. It was difficult, not speaking the native languages. But I made the effort. After a week or so, I had learned maybe a half-dozen phrases.

It was interesting to watch how tolerant the Belgians were to me, if I made even the effort to try to speak their language. Once it was clear I made the effort, they were very accommodating.

In contrast, I watched many other Americans who simply expected everyone over there to speak English, and seemed offended when the Belgians didn't. So, many Americans have very much a dual standard.

I would have to agree that language is probably the most important, but then again so is understanding the currency of the country. You may get short-changed if you don't understand that!
