The scientific basis for c*ck crowing is that it’s part of the male’s territorial display. He’s declaring that this is his patch! The dawn chorus is also a territorial display, with male blackbirds, thrushes, etc, making the same declaration. The difference between their ‘crowing’ and that of the c*ck, is that it’s less strident and more musical to the ear, but all male birds crow in one form or another.

Because he's horny. Yes, really. Crowing is mostly about advertising his presence and trying to intimidate other roosters who might be after the same flock of hens. Crowing is associated with sunrise, mostly because when roosters wake up the first thing they do is announce their presence. But they'll also crow at just about any hour (except when they're sleeping) whenever a rival appears or sometimes just when the mood strikes them.
