Although both British and American English have many words the are "borrowed" from other languages, I think American English words, that is, many of them were shortened to be spelled like people were pronouncing them.
And I would imagine that as dictionaries were written and edited that some words are changed simply because the editor wanted to. And maybe part of that was to Americanize
our English.

Most Americans shorten words on the Internet and not in formal writing but with regards to words like armor/armour, color/colour, etc... I think we dropped the 'u' in Boston Harbor around the time of the Boston Tea Party.

So you are from the UK? We spell it billion...

You're question is funny though, I don't know why America changed the spelling of so many words,
I have to say,
I like the proper (original) spelling better:

especially for words such as analyse. I think it's silly to put a z there just because it sounds like a z. I prefer the proper English spellings.

No, it was because the US was a flegling country and few people could read for a long time, even today. So they had to make it simple for the masses.

Why do Brits instead of going on vacation, go "on holiday"... or instead of going to THE hospital, ... well you get the idea... it's just language evolution... and some call it devolution.
