The attack on Pearl Harbor o December 7, 1941 (and the USS Arizona) was what brought the United States into WWII.

Before then, the US was uninvolved with the war over in Europe. Due to Hawaii's geographical location in the Pacific and it's relative position to Japan, the attack on Pearl Harbor holds significant value to our involvement in the war and our eventual victory.

Pearl Harbor also played a significant role in the corresponding war in the Pacific as it served as a fueling point for planes as they travelled from the US mainland and beyond.

The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day 1962 to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor and the men who died defending it. In 1989, the USS Arizona was designated a national historic landmark. Since 1980, the National Park Service has operated the Memorial and the Visitor Center to ensure the preservation and interpretation of the tangible historical resources associated with the attack — including the rich and vivid memories of its survivors. Veterans have always played a key part in maintaining this historic site. In fact, funding for the USS Arizona Memorial is provided in part by the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, a group of Pearl Harbor survivors and others interested in preserving this important legacy.

Each year, the USS Arizona Memorial welcomes more than 1.4 million visitors from around the world. To accommodate its international and out-of-state visitors, the Park has brochures written in 23 different languages including English, as well as an audio program which is currently offered in English, Chinese and Japanese.

The Japanese attacked us on December 7, 1941, without warning and killed approximately 2,400 Americans, with 1,177 sailors from the USS Arizona. The sneak attack brought the US into World War II.

Why is it important? Everyone will give you different reasons but I think that it is a reminder to be vigilant and to not become complacent. There are many parallels between what happened on December 7, 1941 and September 11, 2001.

First of all, it's the USS Arizona, not 'Arizonia'. It's considered sacred ground because of all the lives lost on that ship during the Pearl Harbor attack.

You must be very young.

Well, until 9 -11 it was the first time that United States was attacked on American soil.

America had sent most soldiers to fight in Europe during World War II. Japan was excited about possibly attacking America while we were busy elsewhere. Pearl Harbor was closest to Japan, and housed the Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor, so it was especially attractive.

It is a symbol of many things. First, it acts as a gravestone for all those unfortunate men who will forever be trapped within the hull of the ship. It honors those who fought so bravely through such adversity. It also stands to remind us and future generations to never be complacent but always vigilant.
