Your grammar was perfect, which stands you out from the average Brit or Yank (I'm a Brit myself, before someone decides to report me for racial abuse), so that's a good place to start.
While their voice may sound good, DON'T copy their grammar! They tend to say 'Very very tense stand-off' when 'Extremely tense stand-off' is correct.
They also now pronounce places like Niger, as 'Neezhair' instead of the traditional 'Nijer': also 'Beijing' for Peking and 'Mumbai' for Bombay. Yet one never hears them say 'Mockba' for Moscow, Caerdydd for Cardiff, 'Abertawe' for Swansea, 'Glazgee' for Glasgow, 'Noo Yawk' for New York, or 'Los Anjaless' for Los Angeles. Basically they're a bunch of pretentious oiks who should be ignored for grammar and etiquette, and regarded with suspicion on most stories from Africa and the Middle East. Sorry, that's my rant over.

Spend some time reading the papers and watching the telly. And, of course, practice, by conversing with anyone who appears interested.
