A 5 o'clock shadow is a term for the formation of whiskers most men get in the evening, along their chin and jaw. They may shave in the morning, but often by the evening, around "5'oclock" the hair has began to grow again. The hair is very short, but it appears to look more like a shadow then actual hair.

This is where the beard starts to show through in the afternoon, much like the fashionable one that George Michael wears, that would have been considered a five o'clock shadow.
