if you ask about "socially acceptable" you are talking about reputation, market share, and tradition...you could find a community (prob) where scientology is more acceptable.

if you thought about religions as business plans, do some religions work better? Do they satisfy deeper needs? Are they easier to understand? Do they provide better benefits? Do people just become regular customers? Are loyal customers recognized? What are the characteristics of the customers?

Some guy, who wrote Marketing Good and Evil, the Religion of Advertising, spoke about the way advertising has become the high church...it is a fruitful idea, and it works to help think about where big religion is going too....

however, on the level of deep personal faith, you will have to take that question to the mountain top, and tell me what you come back with.

Personally, I don't believe that God exists.

I do think there's a chance that there are other life-forms in the Universe. There are an estimated 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 stars in our Universe, many of which will have solar systems such as ours. The odds are against ours being the only planet on which life developed.

I do not believe that our planet has been visited by aliens.

A large portion of society is unwilling to understand that there is a chance of alien life existing, while there is virtually no chance of God existing.

Because people need a purpose in life. Why am I here? What am I supposed to be doing with the life I have been given? There has to be a some meaning to this chaos we call life. Aliens cannot address those issues. Because the first thing that would be asked is.....
Who created THEM?

Belief in a "Prime Mover" or God actually is logical in this universe as everything has a begining and belief in aliens is abstract and not really based on anything except that it seems like fun to some people. Tom Cruise said that it is arrogance to believe that there is not life out there. As soon as someone has some logical proof or even explaination let me know. In the meantime I believe that it is arrogance to not believe that there is Someone greater than us.

Adorable - not illegal immigrants - space aliens. I don't believe in aliens visiting Earth - even so there is much proof of aliens then there is of God.

Because we picture God like ourselves..we gave aliens a totally different look. Who wants to think they came from "little green men"?

Because humans thought they were something special, something grand. They thought Earth was the center of the universe, and that any possible other beings were below their standards. And they were so grand that something HAD to have created them, a glorious superior being. And religion has stuck ever since because, unlike aliens, it doesn't answer the questions of life and death.

B/c ppl are more willing to believe in the whole after-life thing than in something that does not directly effect their life.
