My girlfriend started this diet, where you have next to nothing to eat one day, the next day you eat whatever you want, and back and forth. She swears she's lost 5 lbs in one week, but I don't see it. It doesn't make sense to me, how you can starve yourself one day, and then the next day literally pig out on everything, then starve yourself again, then pig out, etc. and lose weight. Anyone heard of this, or have any science to back it up or disprove it? Thanks!

Years ago, there was this diet my mom was on called the Hilton Head Metabolism Diet. It was similar in concept, except that you dieted to near starvation for an entire week and the second week you got to eat five times per day. Then you repeated the process, alternating weeks until you lost the weight you needed. The end of the diet was a maintenance plan where you ate sensibly to keep the weight off. The theory behind this was by alternating dieting styles, you boosted your metabolism and got it working harder to keep weight off.

My mom swore it worked for her.

Now, this diet your friend is on is likely to work in the short term as long as she's "pigging out" on healthy food. However, diets like that don't usually keep the weight off forever and she's likely to lose less and less weight as it goes on. This week may have been a five pound loss; next week may only be one pound (if any).

The only tried and true method to lose weight and keep it off in the long run is to eat sensibly and exercise.

no. that can't work.
its easy to lose the first 5 pounds anyways.

and whenever you starve yourself for a day
the next time you eat, you body stores all the fat
because it doesn't know when you're going to nourish it again.

that's why people who eat breakfast (and don't make their body think that they're straving) can lose more weight then someone who doesn't.
