I think standing with their backs to it wasn't meant as disrespect but to face the crowd in unity. Why were the men and women facing away from the wall on St. Pat day during the protest? Same reason.
As for that ignorant bigot, PREACHER,...THE WALL was designed by an AMERICAN (born of Chinese parents in 1959, in Athens, OH, whose parents escaped from China in the late 1940's and immigrated to America), not what ever foul word you used to describe her that YAHOO turned into asterisks.
",,,this memorial is for those who have died, and for us to remember them." - Maya Ying Lin, designer, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Maya Ying Lin, was a 21-year-old architecture student at Yale University when she submitted her winning design.
Maya's parents: Henry Huan Lin (ceramist, dean of fine arts - Ohio University) and Julia Chang Lin (professor of literature).

I don't know but my best guess is that they were facing a live peopel so they have give their backs te memorial and maybe it wasn't mean to see bad...People worry and make up so many dumbs things from insignificant things in life so ....I am not attracted to places where is death people....So I never go... I will go until is my to be there now enjoy life thats is for it...Better face the a live ones then the death ones don't you think?

I hated it when I first saw it & it was designed by a **** to add insult to injury. To me , it was just a hole in the ground, just like the graves of my fallen brothers. The more I see it, I've come to accept it.
