"Grandma rollers," :-) or sponge rollers, give you tighter curls that last longer in hard-to-curl hair, but they work better if kept in overnight or several hours, and your hair has to be TOTALLY dry when you take them out, or it's useless. They also tend to get tangled, so until you're a pro at it, have a friend help.
Hot rollers take much less time, as you basically wait for your hair to cool. However, I wouldn't suggest them in really long hair or really straight hair. They tend to be better at defining curl in naturally wavy or curly hair, and straight or long hair tends to be too heavy and just pulls the curls right out.
So I'd definitely go with sponge rollers if you have the time and help, but hot rollers are fine if you have the right hair type or are in a rush.

Hot rollers
with grammas rollers you also need bobby pins. They can get stuck in the rollers and if you get the rollers with the brushy things inside your hair can get tangled in them.
Also, with grammas rollers you wash your hair, towel dry, come and then set your hair with these things. Go under a drier with the plastic bonnet thingy (probably no longer in stores) and sit for 2-3 hours until fully dry.
or you can keep them in all day (6 hours) for them to dray if you are going out at night.
or you sleep in them, toss and turn and try to arrange the pillow to hold your head without imbedding the rollers into your scalp.
you wake up from a sleeplessness night with a fully curled head of hair that just might be alittle frizzy due to the time they stayed in.
any more help?

Hot rollers. Use them on dry hair and use a heat setting product before you put them in then spray with some shine and hold product after you take them out.

Well, I use hot rollers, but I sleep with them in. Not the most comfortable, but my hair looks GORGEOUS. Definitely worth the effort!
