I can see how some kids could have minds that believe in a lot of the really bad stuff sung (like in metal bands), but most or a lot of kids, when they reach a certain age, no longer really believe in some of the songs or just don't care what they're singing about or just don't really follow what they are saying (like if they tell them to shoot up their school, they have a normal mind that won't do what it's singing about).

My dad doesn't let me, but my mom does, and I download the songs (haven't in a while and probably won't that much anymore), and most of my friends listen to bands that are parental advisory. I don't really see the problem with it once a lot of kids reach a certain age.

Could someone please explain this to me?

P.S.- Sorry if I didn't word it that well. For some thoughts, I can't really do that...

I don't mean like real young kids. I'm talking about teenagers.

Just for the record, I'm 15. That, and I don't go around following what Eminem says.

This question just popped into my head (like most of my thoughts, as random as they may be, do).

There area few very religious parents who believe other types of music are "stanic" or something wierd but I don't think thats the majority.
As a parent I think its about raising a kid with some manners and it also depends on the childs maturity.

I agree most kids aren't going to listen to an ozzy CD and go trying to bit animals heads off. (in fact if you actually listen to Ozzys lyrics in a few of his songs he sings about getting along and peace.)

However, while oyu may not view it that way as a child, msot adults find kids today rude and personally I'm only 25 and find most kids annoying and stupid. This behavior includes things like
-drinking and smoking which is portrayed as cool in a lot of music. While a kids not goign to jump off of a building because of a song he does try often to "fit in" and try to be cool or impress their friends. And certain music plays into the idea that it is cool to drink or smoke.

-a lot of music is absulutly insulting to women. Another trate of kids is they have absolutly no respect for women. They make rude comment, jokes, etc. ANd a lot of music portrays women as dumb and sex objects (spray painted and pumped full of plastic mind you) instead of real people with real feelings. You cannot teach and expect respect if you do not support respect. Consumers speak loudest with their dollars. Mindless consumerism ends when you stop and think before you buy...or before you let yourchildren buy if they are not bright enough to stop and think for themselves.

and lastly
- cursing: Pretty much all parental advisory music is full of curse words. Again kids may be mature enough not to do something extreme when listening tomusic but they will not be mature enough to avoid doing something like cursing. Why?? because liek smoking everyone else is doing it, and the music just adds to it. Personally I think if someone is cursing not only are they immature because they don't know how to express their feelings in a poilte manner without letting their emotions take total control of them (usually their bad temper) but it also makes them look pretty stupid if that is the only way they know how to express themselves.

For some children the music is fine because they ahve made a decision to act in mature ways and realize its only music but all to often for the average teen they don't realise all the ways it has an effect on them AND on the people around them.

Not just the topic of a disc an get the PAL (Parental Advisory Label) put on it. I don't want my 6 year old Nieces or 9 Year old Nephew listing to sons that is F that and F this. Just like one of my favorite sons is Called "Smack My B**** Up" by Moby but I would not want (or let) any of the kids I know listen to it. My oldest nephew on the other hand is getting old enough to where we are starting to get him the PAL disks because he is more mature then the others.

Some parents are highly religious and don't want the kids listing to any thing that isn't Gospel music ( but that is their choice as a way to raise their kids.

You don't say how old you are, and I don't know you exact situation, but the parent that does not let you have the PAL disks is probably thinking your not mature enough for them. As for downloading the songs, a lot of the time tracks you get off of download sites are not the PAL versions but are the clean versions

I have always bought them for my daughter (well, not like when she was in elementary school)...but anyway, i figure if she isn't being told "no, you can't listen to that, no, that is awful, bad...it will rot your ears off"...that she would be less inclined to think it was a big huge deal...

the kids only make big deals about it b/c the parents do.

FYI...my daughter is 17...one of the top in her class, always honor roll, she is in school band and 4-H band...works on top of that. She has never shot up her school. lol

I guess you guys are exposed to so much as it is. Its one of the only thing parents have control over. No one really wants their kids exposed to so much violence and cussing etc. Its just harder to protect and keep kids away from the negative things. The world is much more open about things now a days and some parents want to keep their children sheltered or innocense.

Because most parents don't know how to be parents. They are too busy trying to be friends with them.

I don't allow that garbage in my home. My children watch and listen to what I deem is appropriate.

I'm 11 and my parents told me once i was 9 they didn't really care since i was mature enough to know what's right and what's wrong...and i totally agree with them (and besides, by the time you hit 3rd grade, you're gonna know the cusses somewhere or another!)

That certain age is 21. Until then, a parent is responsible. A parent who cares doesn't let their kid under 21 have any such thing, period. There is no NEED for it, it isn't a NECESSITY. The affects are far ranging and often subtle, take the advice, and be done with it, ok?
