I am not starting my normal workout routine until next week so i am going to use elliptical machine for the rest of the week to lose weight. Is it bad for your body or maybe overworking it if i just use it without any resistence whatsoever? So just simple straight elliptical for 80-90 minutes good or bad?

It's not necessarily that this is a bad idea, there are just two problems. The major thing is boredom. Can you honestly see yourself riding the eliptical for 90 minutes every day or every other day? Even if you have a tv to watch it can get mighty boring awful fast. Nothing kills workouts more than when you feel bored and aren't motivated to go.

When I was younger I tried riding the exercise bike for 60 minutes a day to lose weight. I did really good for the first month or so and actually lost about 10 pounds. However then the boredom set in and pretty soon I had gained all the weight I lost right back.

The second problem is that if you're working hard enough, you shouldn't be able to do 90 minutes. Take a basketball player for instance. They get regular breaks, time outs, etc and they still only play for 60 minutes. Instead of trying to do 90 minutes you should try interval training.

Interval training is where you go hard for about 30 seconds and then recover for 30 seconds. It's a bit harder to do with an elliptical machine but the premise is the same. Go as hard as you can for 30 seconds, and then take the next 30 seconds easy to catch your breath. Aim for 20 minutes to start and once that becomes too easy go for 30 minutes. Not only will this save you time and boredom, but interval training jacks up your metabolism so you'll be burning fat during and after the workout.

Hope this answers your question!

Nothing wrong with 90 minutes. Just curious why you'd do it with no resistance. As long as you're doing it that long, might as well dial it up and get a workout.

I don't think so, but, you may want to do it for less time with more resistance or intervals. I do it for 60 minutes & change the resistance throughout (as to keep my body/muscles guessing)

I don't know if it is good or bad for you. I've been on one for 90 mins before and felt fine.

I could walk or lift my arms for 20 minutes, but after that I was ok.

at some point your body thinks that it will continue to work at that rate for a long time, so it starts to burn less fat, and reserves some for later use....so yes, it is possible to over work yourself, and get the opposite results of what you desire. If you are going to a gym, just ask one of the trainers floating around there what the optimum time is, that is their job to tell you. i would guess 40-50 minutes is that max, but again, that is just a guess.

Is that you, Emily?

Don't use it that long unless you are a serious all the time runner! You are going to make yourself sick! Limit it to 60 minutes.
