For Japanese, I would recommend Mr. Wasabi off Mira Mesa Blvd (pretty much right behind/next to Longs). Their dishes are pretty authentic tasting, I'd give the price rating: $$. It's a small restaurant and there may be a wait, but it's usually not for too long.

For a quick lunch or very casual dinner (when you're not in the fast food mood), I would recommend Da Kitchen in Scripps Ranch off Carroll Canyon Rd (in the same small shopping area as Carl's Jr.). The restaurant was started in Maui and they serve Hawai'ian "Plate Lunch" fare, which usually consists of a meat item of your choice, mac salad and rice. They have a wide variety of BBQ meat items and serve noodle dishes too. Portions are HUGE, I'm sure most everyone always walks out with leftovers for a snack later (or lunch the next day). Plates range around $7-8. Sundays though they're only open until 3pm.

Find your way to Crystal Pier at the end of Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach.

Go to Kono's right at that corner.

Stand in line to order your food and then grab one of the tables outside.

Watch the Pacific Ocean and all the joggers, walkers, bikers, and the rest of the world go by as you enjoy a great breakfast at great prices with some of the best coffee in town or anywhere.

Get there early.

Disgagree with earliers answer about Ruth Chris. I think the atmosphere is too loud and the place is too crowded and the steaks are drenched in butter and everything is overpriced.

For an upscale experience try Rainwaters at Kettner near the train station. Very nice steaks and chops in a old style formal atmosphere.

Wander around Little Italy on India street and pick a place at random.

Parallel 33 in North Park is amazing! It is fusion cuisine of all foods on the 33rd parallel. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and the atmosphere is very warm. For steaks, go with Donovans in La Jolla UTC. It is ridiculously expensive but so delicious! For the best vegetarian food in San Diego, try Sipz in Clairemont. The fake meat there is tastier than real meat and it's pretty cheap.

If price is no object, I'd pick Island Prime. It is on Harbor Island, near the airport, overlooking the bay and downtown San Diego. It's run by Chef Debra Scott, my favorite Chef of all time (also owner/chef for Indigo Grill and Kemo Sabe, two other FABULOUS restaurants). Island Prime specializes in Steaks, and in my opinion it's better than Ruth's Chris, and probably about the same price. The sides are incredible: lobster twice-baked potato that could feed about 4 people, sauteed mushrooms, a fantastic asparagus, wonderful salads. For desert, you can't go wrong with any of the choices.

Also in the same building with JUST as good a view is the more casual C-Level lounge. I almost always get a spinach salad that has bacon, tomatoes, goat cheese, and a sesame dressing. THey also have wonderful sandwiches, pastas, fish n chips, and the same terrific desert menu as Island Prime.

Joe's Crab Shack is one of my faves in S.D. They serve all kindof seafood but also serve steak, fries, and normal stuff of the like. The price sint too bad. If yiu are of age to drink, they have have excellenet mixed drins as well. The atmosphere is great and very family oriented. If you are looking for something a little more sophisticated The Butcher Shop is a great place. It is somewhat pricy and not a family place. Everything is candlelit or dim lighting. Outstanding food and some of the most high class wines and liquor available. Great place for an anniversary or anytime you want to be treated.

If price really isn't an object, Mille Fleur in RSF.

For more reasonable steaks, Greystones or Mortons downtown.

The Fish Market for fresh fish.

And the Hotel del or El Bizcocho at Rancho Bernardo Inn, the two best Sunday brunches in town.

Sixth Avenue Bistro downtown on 6th and B st, their food is Great! big portions, good variety.

Prices aren't bad and the kind of food ranges from burgers, to a few cajun items, Big salads, hot sandwiches and house specialties like fish & chips, roast chicken and mashed potatoes.

Dinnner has a few more options, dinner specials like New York steak, Mahi Mahi and Salmon, Beef Strog.

And they a full Bar, Margaritas are Good!

They also serve a full breakfast, good bacon, and Amazing Oatmeal, yes I said Oatmeal.

I work close by, so we're there almost everyday, food is amazing.

This isn't a restaurant, per say, but they have such good food! It's a little taco shop called Taco Surf! It's on Mission between Emerald & Diamond, right by the beach. Fantastic burritos, whether you're there for breakfast or lunch! Any time I go to visit, I go there. YUM! Now I want Taco Surf!

Ruth Chris...it's a steakhouse, pretty expensive, but FABULOUS. It's off the I-5 in Del Mar. Or, more campy, the Old Town Mexican Cafe in Old Town.
