Why don't you try being yourself? I too have recently moved to a new school. I cracked the ice by telling a joke that had everyone laughing. Try smiling at everyone and just being nice. In time you should have plenty of friends.
Don't be a social outcast and not talk to anybody, because then people will think you're just stuck up, and that you think you're better than them. Always be polite and find time to compliment girls without sounding too desperate. Maybe a 'I like your hair *smile*'. Paying close attention to the small things helps, too. Maybe complimenting earrings, or a girl's new hairstyle. Just be yourself and if you see someone with 'friend potential' then go up and talk to them. Or ask if you can sit with them at lunch? It may seem far-off, but trust me, people are more open and nice than you think ;-).
I hope you make some new friends =)

Beggars cant be chooser, some of these people you discribe are just like you , but put on a mask to be liked by others. Im not telling you to do the same thing , but you should try being frinds with all types of people, you'll definately have more choices

Choose your friends wisely. Some many come as sheep in wolves clothing. Always walk softly but carry a BIG stick...

Does your school have clubs? You should join into that interest you. If not, when teachers get students into group in your classes, introduce yourself and have a little talk while you're doing what you're assigned to do.

heres my suggestion.. i've done it and it works for all that i've suggested it to..
when in class and you are sitting next to someone you dont know, make eye contact and give them a geniune smile and a bit later give them a compliment on something, there shoes, maybe they have the same back pack as your brother and you adore it.. i dunno.. but it works everytime.. a friendly smile can only coax one out of someone.. also be approachable.. dont worry about sterotypes.. they wont get you anywhere
