i don't know if it is legal or not, but it would be messy and not so healthy that's for sure.

Some cities have restrictions on the types of pets you may have. If you live in the country it should not be a problem. Chickens don't really need shots or medication unless they're sick.

Nah, it's not illegal to have a chick as a pet. Although it depends on where you live, if you live in the countryside go for it!
But if you live in the city, like in a suburban house with backyard that'll work but you'll have to find out if the chicken can stay there. If you want the best advice try asking a chicken breeder, here's a site that can probably help you: http://www.backyardchickens.com

Most chickens are found on farms or at the supper market. I have had a pet chicken and Buddy was the only pet I couldn't take with me when I moved as it is against the law to be in possession of farm animals where I now live. If you are a home owner you just have to check with the city, town, or county you live in. If your an apartment dweller you need to also check with the landlord. Most populated places do not allow farm animals. There may be an exception if you keep the chicken in a cage like a parrot. Best of luck...

I have had chickens as pets for three years. I checked with environmental health before I got them and so long as I don't have huge numbers of hens or any cockerels then it's all legal.
If you live in the USA then you can check at www.municode.com
Checkers, are you on the BYC forum to? I'm V Chic Chick there ^_^

It isn't illegal to have a chicken for a pet. However, a chicken is considered a farm animal and it would have to be legal in your area to keep a farm animal. If you live in a city or residential area, it is doubtful. Call your local county clerks office. They should be able to help you. I had chicks as pets when I was younger. Once they got fully grown we had to give them to a farmer. We kept them in our basement in a huge cardboard box with thick newspapers on the bottom. We had a heat lamp hooked to a ladder above them. When young they need to be kept warm. We had a hatchery near to where we lived. They used to have colored chicks for Easter. They were so cute in pink, lavender, blue and of course, yellow.

Call your local Animal Control office (which is usually part of the Police Department) to find out about regulations in your specific area. Some areas ban poultry in residential areas and others do not.
If there are no specific regulations against having poultry in your yard, then you're okay.
However, if the birds become a nuissance (making a lot of noise, stinking up the place, or flying into neighbors' yards), Animal Control may have you remove them. So make sure you keep your birds healthy and quiet, and clean their waste up.

Welcome to Y!A I see you in basic terms registered. I take it this might nicely be a humorous tale question? No this is not unlawful to maintain chickens in eire (notice spelling) I even have 28 chickens on the 2nd. even although to import a fowl from Mexico you may might desire to envision with the appropriate government right here besides the fact that if surely that's conceivable because of regulations concerning Avian Influenza (fowl Flu). ideal of success with all of it.

That would depend on where you live , each city , town or municipality has their own by-laws on such things including rules on where and how many you can have .
Check with the animal control or SPCA in your area to find out for sure .
Chickens can easlily contract virus's so I would be carefull .

Check with your local vet to see if he/she knows of any restrictions or Animal Control. But when I was a kid we had a white hen that we obtained (can't remember where or why), but that chicken would follow us kids like a little puppy...she would stay in the garage at night (Dad fixed a place for her) and she was just wonderful. But one day the neighbors dog got loose and Henny was in the yard and it killed her..so if you do..be sure something like that doesn't happen..always supervise your chick !!!! Good Luck

It is not illegal to have pet chickens. It may be against the rules, for the area you live in, though. You will have to ask around (reliable people), to find out if there are any restrictions in your area.
